Description

The MQ-9 CO Carbon Monoxide Methane Liquefied Gas Sensor is a low-cost, highly sensitive semiconductor gas detection module designed for monitoring carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH₄), propane, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in domestic, industrial, and portable gas detection applications. Built around the MQ-9 sensor with a tin dioxide (SnO₂) sensing layer, this module offers good sensitivity to both CO and combustible gases, making it a versatile choice for multi-gas safety monitoring.

At the heart of the module is the MQ-9 sensor element, which uses a dual-temperature cycle detection method to differentiate between gas types. At low temperature (1.5V heater), the sensor detects carbon monoxide (CO) — its conductivity increases as CO concentration rises. At high temperature (5.0V heater), it detects combustible gases such as methane and propane, while simultaneously cleaning the sensor surface of adsorbed gases from the low-temperature phase. This cycling method is essential for accurate and stable operation.

The module provides two independent outputs: an analog output (AO) that varies continuously with gas concentration for trend monitoring, and a digital output (DO) that switches when the concentration exceeds a user-adjustable threshold set by the onboard potentiometer. The TTL digital output is active-low (LOW when gas is detected) and can be connected directly to a microcontroller or relay module.

The module operates from 5V DC with a typical current consumption of approximately 150mA. It is compatible with Arduino, ESP32, and other 5V microcontrollers; Raspberry Pi users require an external ADC. The board features a compact 32 × 20 × 22mm form factor with four mounting holes, and an onboard LED indicator provides visual feedback for power and digital output status.

Important Note: The MQ-9 requires a significant preheat time for stable operation — the datasheet specifies over 48 hours for reliable readings. After each power-up, allow adequate time for the heater to stabilize. Critical: Most standard MQ-9 breakout boards do not include the heater cycling circuit required for proper dual-temperature operation. You must either implement the 5V/1.5V heater cycle manually (using a PWM pin or external circuit) or modify the board. The sensor is not a calibrated industrial-grade detector and should not be used as a sole life-safety device. Its sensitivity degrades over time, and periodic replacement is recommended for critical applications. The sensor surface becomes hot during operation — avoid touching it. The module is not waterproof and should be kept dry.

Whether you are building a home CO alarm, an industrial multi-gas detector, or an educational sensor project, the MQ-9 module provides a reliable, affordable solution for carbon monoxide and combustible gas detection.
