Description
The RED Flame Sensor Module is a 4-wire infrared detection board designed for flame sensing, fire alarm prototypes, and robotics projects. The “RED” designation refers to the module’s PCB color and does not indicate different electrical specifications from standard 4-wire flame sensor modules. It uses an infrared photodiode sensitive to wavelengths in the 760nm to 1100nm range, which corresponds to the infrared radiation emitted by flames . An onboard LM393 comparator with an adjustable potentiometer allows users to set the threshold for digital flame detection .
This 4-wire version provides both digital (DO) and analog (AO) outputs. The DO pin goes LOW when infrared intensity exceeds the adjustable threshold, while the AO pin provides a voltage proportional to infrared intensity—useful for measuring relative flame strength or distance trends . The detection angle is approximately 60 degrees, with a typical lighter-flame detection distance of 80cm to 100cm depending on flame size .
Important limitation: The sensor responds to any strong infrared source, including sunlight and incandescent lamps. Research has shown that daytime sunlight can overwhelm the sensor, making it difficult to distinguish flame from ambient IR during peak sunlight hours . This module is intended for educational, hobbyist, and prototype applications only—it is not a life-safety certified fire detection device.
