Description

The YF-S201C is a Hall-effect turbine flow sensor designed for inline measurement of liquid flow rate and total volume in Arduino, ESP32, and other microcontroller projects. This black plastic variant shares the same core sensing mechanism as the transparent YF-S201C, but uses an opaque black body instead of a clear housing. It consists of a plastic valve body with a G1/2″ (DN15) threaded connection containing a magnetic pinwheel impeller and a Hall-effect sensor. As liquid flows through the sensor, the impeller rotates, and the Hall sensor detects the magnet’s rotation, outputting a digital pulse train on the signal wire. The pulse frequency is proportional to flow rate, allowing the microcontroller to calculate both instantaneous flow (L/min) and cumulative volume (liters).

The sensor operates from 3.5V to 18V DC (5V typical) with a maximum current draw of around 15mA and outputs a pulse signal with amplitude tied to the supply voltage. The flow range is listed as 1–30 L/min for the black YF-S201C variant , while some transparent YF-S201C listings specify a narrower 1–25 L/min range . Accuracy is typically listed as ±3% for the YF-S201C family , though the broader YF-S201 family is often described as having up to ±10% error . The body is made of plastic with a magnetic impeller and Hall sensor, suitable for water and non-aggressive liquids.

Critical limitations: This is a low-cost, non-certified sensor intended for educational, hobbyist, and light commercial use. The pulse rate can vary with flow rate, fluid pressure, and sensor orientation, and calibration against a known volume is recommended for better precision . For revenue-grade metering or safety-critical systems, a certified flow meter should be used instead.

Features

  • Hall-Effect Pulse Output: Digital square wave proportional to flow rate, readable by any microcontroller with an interrupt-capable GPIO.

  • G1/2″ (DN15) Threaded Connection: Standard nominal pipe size for easy integration into water lines.

  • Black Opaque Housing: Durable plastic body; unlike the transparent variant, it does not allow visual inspection of the impeller.

  • Flow Range 1–30 L/min: Suitable for water heaters, water dispensers, coffee machines, and small-scale process control .

  • Wide Voltage Range (3.5–18V DC): 5V typical for Arduino; 24V maximum .

  • Low Power Consumption: Maximum 15mA at 5V, suitable for embedded applications .

  • Sealed Hall Sensor: The sensing electronics are isolated from the liquid path.

  • Compact and Lightweight: Approximately 22g, with a short cable lead .
