This high-performance ESP32-CAM [8M] with OV2640 Camera is an upgraded version of the classic AI-Thinker vision module. Optimized for 2025 AIoT requirements, this [CHN] edition features a massive 8MB of External PSRAM, providing double the memory of standard modules for smoother video streaming and more complex image processing.

Product Description
The ESP32-CAM [8M] is a professional-grade, small-form-factor camera development board. It integrates the dual-core ESP32-S processor with an upgraded 8MB PSRAM (Pseudo Static RAM). This extra memory is a critical advantage for developers; it allows for high-resolution UXGA (1600×1200) JPEG encoding without the system resets often seen in 4MB versions.
The board comes bundled with the OV2640 2-Megapixel camera and features an onboard MicroSD card slot for local data logging. With integrated Wi-Fi and Dual-mode Bluetooth, this module can stream live video to a web browser, upload files to an FTP server, or act as an edge-computing node for facial recognition and object detection.
Key Features
  • Upgraded 8MB PSRAM: Provides superior stability for high-resolution image buffering and complex AI algorithms.
  • 2MP High-Sensitivity Vision: Includes the OV2640 camera, supporting JPEG, BMP, and Grayscale outputs with excellent color reproduction.
  • Dual-Core Processing: Powered by the Xtensa® 32-bit LX6 CPU (up to 240MHz) for simultaneous wireless communication and image processing.
  • MicroSD Local Storage: Integrated slot supports up to 4GB for offline recording, time-lapse photography, or data logging.
  • Night Vision Ready: Features an onboard bright white flash LED for low-light photography.
  • Compact DIP-16 Package: Small footprint (27mm x 40.5mm) suitable for smart doorbells, hidden cameras, and industrial robotics.
Usage Scenarios
  • Business & Industry: Prototyping for industrial QR/barcode scanners, smart agricultural monitoring, and wireless machine vision.
  • Smart Home Security: Building Wi-Fi video doorbells, pet monitors, and 3D printer remote monitoring (OctoPrint/Mainsail).
  • Edge AI Development: Perfect for lightweight “TinyML” projects such as face detection, color tracking, and motion-triggered alerts
Q: Why choose the 8MB PSRAM version over the 4MB version?

The 8MB PSRAM allows you to use higher resolution settings and higher JPEG quality (lower compression) without running out of memory. This is essential for applications requiring clear images for facial recognition or OCR

Q: Does this board have a built-in USB port for programming?

No. To save space, it uses a serial header. You will need an FTDI / USB-to-Serial adapter (set to 3.3V) or an ESP32-CAM-MB programmer base to upload your code

Q: Why does the board reboot when I start the camera stream?

This is almost always a power supply issue. The module draws significant current peaks when the Wi-Fi and Camera activate. Ensure you are using a 5V power source capable of delivering at least 2A

Q: Can I use the MicroSD card and the Flash LED at the same time?

Be aware that GPIO 4 is shared between the SD card data line and the Flash LED. The LED will flicker when the SD card is being accessed. If this is an issue, you can desolder the LED or use an external light source

Q: Is it compatible with the Arduino IDE?

Yes. In the Board Manager, select “AI Thinker ESP32-CAM”. It is also fully compatible with MicroPython and Espressif’s ESP-IDF

Q: What is the maximum resolution for video streaming?

While it can capture 1600×1200 stills, smooth Wi-Fi video streaming is most effective at VGA (640×480) or SVGA (800×600) to maintain a high frame rate.
