The ESP32-WROOM-IPEX is a general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + Bluetooth LE MCU module from Espressif Systems, equipped with an external U.FL (IPEX) antenna connector instead of the standard onboard PCB antenna. This variant is designed for applications where the module is placed inside a metal enclosure, a shielded assembly, or any environment where RF signals are blocked or severely attenuated .
At its core, the module uses the ESP32-D0WD chip (or ESP32-D0WDQ6 in some WROVER variants), featuring a dual-core Xtensa 32-bit LX6 microprocessor with a clock frequency adjustable from 80 MHz to 240 MHz . The module supports Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) up to 150 Mbps and Bluetooth v4.2 (BR/EDR and BLE), with antenna output power up to 20 dBm for maximum wireless range .
The U.FL/IPEX connector allows you to attach an external antenna — a whip, a flexible PCB antenna, or a stubby antenna — via a short coax pigtail. This provides significant placement freedom: the antenna can be mounted outside the enclosure, away from metal components, batteries, and other sources of interference. This is the preferred solution when the main board must be enclosed in metal or when maximum range is required .
Important antenna switching note: On ESP32-WROOM modules that include both a PCB antenna and an IPEX connector, only one antenna path is active at a time. The active antenna is selected by a 0-ohm resistor (or solder bridge) on the module or carrier board. The factory default is typically the onboard PCB antenna. To use the IPEX connector, you must physically move the 0-ohm resistor from the PCB antenna position to the IPEX position . Software switching is not supported on standard ESP32-WROOM hardware .
Note: If your module is the IPEX-only variant (no onboard PCB antenna), the connector is already active and no modification is required. Check your specific module’s markings or datasheet to confirm which variant you have.
Important Note on Product Status: Espressif has transitioned its ESP32-WROOM lineup. For new designs, the ESP32-WROOM-32UE (IPEX/U.FL variant) is the recommended current part. The older ESP32-WROOM-IPEX and WROVER (IPEX) variants remain available but are gradually phased out .
Development support is extensive, with official support for Espressif’s ESP-IDF and the Arduino IDE through the Arduino-ESP32 core. The module is suitable for both individual makers and businesses purchasing for product development, industrial IoT, smart home devices, and applications requiring reliable wireless connectivity in challenging RF environments.
