Description
The GP2Y0A02YK0F is Sharp’s longest-range analog infrared distance sensor, designed for applications requiring reliable object detection at greater distances than shorter-range models can provide. It uses optical triangulation—combining an infrared emitting LED (IRED) and a position-sensitive detector (PSD)—to measure distance to a reflective object, outputting an analog voltage that varies inversely with distance . With a detection range of 20cm to 150cm, this sensor is a viable alternative to sonar in many robotics and automation applications, offering better performance than simpler IR sensors at a lower cost than ultrasonic rangefinders .
The sensor connects to any microcontroller with an ADC, making it suitable for Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi projects (with external ADC). The output voltage ranges from approximately 0.4V at 150cm to 2.7V at 20cm, with a typical output voltage differential of 2.05V over the full range . The relationship between output voltage and the inverse of distance is approximately linear, allowing conversion to distance through a best-fit line or empirical formula .
Critical power supply note: The sensor draws current in large, short bursts during its internal LED pulses. Sharp strongly recommends placing a 10µF or larger bypass capacitor between VCC and GND as close to the sensor as possible to stabilize the power supply and prevent erratic readings .
